2. Student Opportunities to Serve the Community
A. Alaska Seasons of Service
This is a coordinated series of year-round service project
ooportunities sponsored and promoted by the Points of Light Foundation
offering invitations for youth and families to volunteer for service
projects and activities throughout the year. More than 20 million people
volunteer each year to be part of the Seasons of Service-a year-round
action plan to illustrate how a single day of service
can grow into an ongoing habit of helping communities. Learn more at
www.pointsoflight.org/programs/seasons
Here is the portfolio of national opportunities for youth people to
volunteer their time and talents to service projects and activities
throughout the
year.
| October | A National Day to Help Others |
| November | National Family Volunteer Day |
| January | A day ON...not a day off! |
| April | Inspire by Example |
| April | The Power of Youth Serving Youth |
| May | Youth and Adults Volunteering Together |
Each day of service is sponsored by a national organization and focuses on
a theme that targets a specific group. Building each day of service into
your program calendar can promote volunteerism in your community and
provide opportunities for project-oriented problem solving, planning,
teaching, researching, networking, and increasing community awareness. The
idea is to turn people on to service so they will become life-long
volunteers.

A. Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor young people in middle
level and high school grades for outstanding volunteer service to their
communities. Created in 1995 by Prudential Financial in partnership with
the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the awards
constitute the United States' largest youth recognition program based
solely on volunteering. Over the past 11 years, the program has honored
more than 70,000 young volunteers at the local, state and national level.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognize students in middle and
high school grades who have demonstrated exemplary community service.
Applications are solicited each fall through more than 40,000 public and
private middle-level and high schools, and through officially designated
local organizations across the country. These organizations include Girl
Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters,
YMCAs, and member volunteer centers of the Points of Light Foundation &
Volunteer Center National Network. Local Honorees are selected at
participating schools and organizations in November, and from these
winners, two State Honorees are chosen in each state and the District of
Columbia. Finally, 10 National Honorees are picked by a panel of prominent
judges, and announced at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., in May.
Who is eligible?
Any young person who:
Is in grades 5–12 as of the last weekday in October during the applying
year, in any state or the District of Columbia.
Has engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during
the 12 months prior to the date of application.
