The 9th annual 2006 Alaska Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute will be held June 16-20, 2006.

Alaska Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute
1. What is it?
A dynamic 50 hour community leadership training for selected youth from across Alaska including 5 days of skill development and instruction in personal and group leadership exploration, community assessment, diversity, goal setting, team building, project planning, and decision making, plus hands on service-learning exercises, a community service project, and a graduation ceremony.
2. Who is it for?
A diverse group of 30-40 high school age youth in grades 9-12 who would like to learn leadership skills in order to make their community a better place to live. All young people with a positive attitude, commitment to strengthening the community, and a desire to build their own leadership skills are invited to apply. The PYLI training is open to all Alaskan youth.
3. Why is it being offered?
Alaska PYLI helps youth develop the competence and character to be community school leaders. In support of America's Promise : The Alliance for Youth and part of the national " Spirit of Community Initiative " developed by the Prudential Insurance Company, and coordinated nationally by the Points of Light Foundation, this service leadership training builds skills and resources in youth, creates meaningful opportunities to serve and provides mentoring to encourage youth leaders to lead their school community in volunteer service.
4. Who is supporting it?
The Alaska Spirit of Community Program and PYLI are supported locally by Prudential Real Estate and in partnership with Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals and Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice, Communities In Schools - Alaska , Alaska Association of School Administrators, Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Anchorage,Anchorage Youth Advisory Commission, Alaska Youth As Resources, Friends of Alaska PYLI, and the PYLI Alumni Student Association. Alaska PYLI is offered through a collaboration of Alaskan youth and community organizations implementing the student leadership training, with civic, education, youth, and business organization support. PYLI is part of a nationwide Points of Light Foundation commitment to encourage and increase youth leadership for service and citizenship. PYLI is a local commitment to providing all youth caring adult relationships, training in marketable skills and opportunities to give back to the community through service. 1/2 ASD elective credit is available.
5. When is it? The summer session of the Alaska Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute will be held June 16 - 20, 2006 at the Carlquist Conference Center near Mirror Lake.
Fee: $ 125 some need based scholarship assistance is available. The residential training will be followed by a community service project and graduation ceremony.
6. How do young people apply?
Young people in grades 9-12 can fill out an application available from Prudential Real Estate offices, school counseling-career guidance offices, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, or online at www.alaskahousehunters.com It must be submitted with participation fees to Friends of Alaska PYLI 3220 East 40th Ave Anchorage, Ak 99508 or dropped at Prudential Real Estate offices in Anchorage, Eagle River or Wasilla ASAP and no later than June 1.
7. How will they be selected?
Schools, community agencies and youth organizations are encouraged to make the applications available as widely as possible to all interested youth. Applications will be reviewed and applicants selected by the Alaska PYLI Steering Committee. Notice of selection will be made to youth within 2 weeks of application.

Dear Youth, Parent, Principal and School Community Member:
Welcome to the 9th annual 2006 Alaska Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute ! We are pleased to invite you to participate in this exciting youth leadership development program. Under the auspices of the Points of Light Foundation,young people across the country have the opportunity of receiving the caliber of leadership training that is typically available only to Fortune 500 executives and government leaders. The Institute is a joint effort by the Prudential, the Center for Creative Leadership, and the Points of Light Foundation and is being implemented in Alaska by a collaboration of youth organizations working in partnership with local civic, business, education, and community organizations. Friends of Alaska PYLI and the Alaska PYLI Steering Committee is currently coordinating and promoting the Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute Training in Alaska.
The Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute (PYLI) features approximately 50 hours of interactive presentations, group discussions and hands-on leadership and community service activities that focus on the dynamic challenges confronting leaders of all ages. The Institute's service component is integrated throughout the program so young leaders will emerge from the training with the understanding that service to one's community is an integral part of leadership and citizenship. The Institute concludes with the implementation of a community service project planned and organized by the young people and involving peer, adult and business partners.
We are looking for young people in grades 9-12 who have an interest in leadership and a desire to improve their community. The Alaska PYLI Steering Committee will select participants for the PYLI Institute scheduled for June 16-20 at the Carlquist Conference Center. The Institute is open to all youth. Previous leadership training or experience is not necessary. Some partial scholarship assistance is available for those who do not have the participation fee.
Alaska PYLI is a unique experience! It's a chance for students to develop new skills, define challenges facing their communities, and develop real solutions. In support on America's Promise : The Alliance for Youth and as part of the national " Spirit of Community Initiative " , PYLI seeks to encourage young people to " Catch the Spirit " of volunteer community service and leadership.
